How They Got Their Name? #1

I came across an old book owned by my father - 100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names, written by Diana Wells. I thought occasionally I would share a few info written in it. Extra information would never hurt, right?

For the first flower, I choose to start with my name, the Jasmine flower. Enjoy reading :)

Common names : Jasmine, Jessamine
Family : Oleaceae

Jasmine comes from the ancient Persian name for the plant, yasmin. It has been cultivated so long that it is uncertain how it came to Europe. The Persians valued it highly and knew how to extract its scent by steeping the blossoms in sesame oil.

Scientific names for the Jasmine flower : Jasminum officinale, Jasminum nudiflorum
